Travel is an important part of business, but it can complicate things. All the critical parts of a healthy lifestyle are potentially interrupted when one is on the road. 

The key to any successful trip, whether it’s for business or fun, is to plan ahead. What can you do to stay in shape while you travel? 

Fitness Amenities

The obvious answer is to book a room at a hotel or resort that offers fitness amenities such as:

  • A gym
  • A running track
  • A pool

Anyone of those travel perks will give you a place to follow your normal workout routine.

Room Exercises

In a pinch, you can do isometric exercises anywhere. You use your body weight to get your heart pumping and your muscles burning. For example: 

Lie down in a plank position as if you are going to do a pushup. Pull one knee up to your chest and then quickly shift legs. 

Most isometric exercises allow you to work your core and increase your heart rate at the same time. It’s not as good of a choice as going to a gym, but it is a practical alternative when traveling. 

Check Out the Neighborhood

While planning your trip see what is available in the neighborhood.

  • Where are the local walking trails or running tracks?
  • Is there a gym near the hotel that allows you to pay per visit?
  • Where are the nearest classes? Spin? Yoga? Dance? 

Even a local mall can give you a safe and interesting place to walk. Make finding workout options part of your travel itinerary.

Packing the Right Fitness Tools 

Traveling isn’t about just where you lay your head. Unfortunately, much of the time you are sitting at airports, stopping for a break while driving or waiting for the next meeting to start. 

It’s possible to find ways to move during those in-between times, too.  Start by packing for fitness. Keep some essentials in your carry-on luggage such as:

  • Workout clothing
  • Swimsuit
  • Resistance tubing
  • Jump rope

Ideally, travel with your workout shoes on, so when you have a minute to walk around the airport, venue or parking lot, you’re ready to go. 

Planning your travel to include fitness stops does more than keep you in shape. Sitting for too long is bad for your health. It affects your circulation, increases fatigue and generally, make travel a lot more stressful.
