Making Resolutions You Can Keep
We all have the best of intentions when making New Year's fitness resolutions, but making them realistic and attainable can be another story. To make resolutions that stick, let's start with your reality.
How much time and effort are you willing to give?
If you are currently working out once each week, it's unrealistic to think that beginning on January 1st, you will suddenly have the will to exercise six days a week. "Make a promise to yourself that you can keep each day, and experience that small win each and every day," says Mitch Batkin, Sport&Health's Senior Vice President of Fitness. "Can you commit to 5 minutes of exercise a day? Inevitably, one of two things will happen. You'll complete 5 minutes and feel pretty good about today. Or you'll complete 5 minutes and decide that you can actually go for 10 or 15. It sounds so simple, but setting yourself up for a win every day is so incredibly effective for long-term success."
What do you actually enjoy doing?
You'd be surprised by how many people with a goal to run a 5K or a marathon actually do not enjoy running. Why torture yourself? Find something that feels like play to you, and you'll have no problem finding the motivation to do it.
One of our favorite success stories from this past year is Elizabeth Thackery, who lost 110 pounds with Zumba. "I tried cycle, swimming, running… and then one day I walked into a Zumba class. Zumba was just that thing for me - I loved it," she says. Doing something she truly loved made it easy for Elizabeth to stick to her workouts. She even rearranged her schedule to fit more Zumba into her life! She is now a Zumba instructor at Sport&Health, inspiring hundreds of other members to get fit.
How do you want to train?
Prefer to workout with friends? Try a group fitness class! There's always a great energy in the room, and you don't have to think about a thing. We'll give you the workout - you just need to give it all you've got. Or set a fitness date with a friend! Knowing they'll be waiting for you (and will be disappointed if you don't show up) is a great motivator. In addition to our complimentary group fitness classes, we also have specialty group training programs that give you the camaraderie that comes from working out with a group, plus the benefit of working with a trainer.
Do you enjoy solo workouts, but just aren't quite sure what to do once you get to the club? Check out our Workout Routine board on Pinterest, as well as our Exercise How-To Video board, for some fresh workout ideas. And our personal training team is always ready to help. Please see our trainers at the club for any questions you may have about equipment or workouts. Or check out our private and partner training options for some extra personal attention.
And most importantly… are you in the right "head space"?
Let's face it, this isn't about losing 20 pounds or getting 6-pack abs. It's about feeling your best and living your best life. A new year brings us to a point of reflection on what we'd like to do differently in our lives. What would losing 20 pounds do for you? How would completing a marathon change your life? Connect to the WHY behind your resolutions, and you may find yourself more easily committed to keeping them.
Whatever you're hoping to accomplish this year, we're here to help you. This is not only our business, it is our passion… it's what we do! Nothing makes us happier than to see our members breaking through barriers and changing their lives in our clubs. Here's to an amazing new year!
