Here's a little behind-the-scenes action from the 2018 Citi Open...

This month, the Citi Open once again came to D.C. and housed some of the best tennis athletes and rising stars the sport has to offer. Of course, the on-court action was a sight to see, but did you know that we were part of the action? Sport&Health hosted a fun, interactive setting to meet and interact with some of our fabulous employees, take selfies with a giant tennis racket, visit our pop-up player's gym and more! Taking the action to the big screen, we were even featured on WJLA.

In case you missed it, we compiled all the action for you! Get a taste of our player's gym, some behind-the-scenes tips on how to how to train like the pros and even an interview with one of Tennis' rising stars and Sport&Health member, Natasha.

Kidd Around Town: Kevin Teaches Kidd some Tennis-Style Workouts

Kevin Boyle, Explosive Performance Director, gave Kidd the workout of a lifetime, showing him what it takes to train like the pros.

Here's a breakdown of the benefits of the mini workout:

  • Banded Half Kneeling Chop Variation
    • Works on core stability
    • Helps teach you to differentiate your torso from your hips - adding more power and avoiding injury
  • Two-leg and single-leg medicine ball toss
    • Focuses on loading off the inside leg
    • Serves as a primer for going on-court to be more powerful
    • Improves power and ground strokes + the ability to cut sharply off the inside leg
  • Soft Tissue Recovery
    • Helps with recovery after playing on-court (i.e. by using a Hyper Ice Volt, foam roller or even a tennis ball)

Some background info on the sport-specific footwork featured in the video:

  • Pratice turning hips to help with lob shots - the ability to turn directions to get a ball traveling overhead
  • Incorporate ankle and knee stability exercises into your fitness routine to help work on absorbing force on one leg
    • This benefits any sport, but is particularly helpful in regard to tennis due to the frequent ankle and knee injuries that can occur
    • This can be done at the tail end of warmups or as part of strength training

Rising Tennis Star, Natasha teaches Kidd how to Serve

McLean Sport&Health member, Natasha Subhash, a 16 year old rising star who played at the Citi Open tournament and will be participating in the US Open next month, gave Kidd some valuable tennis lessons. Watch below for some great information, as well as a few laughs!
