With Memorial Day at the end of this month, you’re probably looking forward to your summer plans but have you considered how you plan to stay healthy in the summer months?  Your team at Sport&Health has put together 5 healthy habits to start now so they’ll be a part of your routine once summer finally arrives!

Work Out in the Morning

A morning workout will benefit you all day – you’ll amp up your metabolism, increase your energy and feel-good endorphins, and free up your evening for fun summer plans! To establish your morning routine, start the night before. Put your gym bag together, generate an idea of what your workout will look like, and get 7 to 9 hours of sleep - by morning you’ll be prepared to work out. Starting this routine in the spring will help you beat the summer heat and have your body well on its way to being beach ready!

Shop the Farmer's Market

Fresh produce is a welcomed item in the kitchen after months of cold weather and hearty meals. What better way to get fresh fruits and vegetables than shopping at your local farmer’s market? With over 150 farmer’s markets in the DC-area, odds are there’s a market close to you (possibly within walking distance from your home or Sport&Health!).

Easily find a farmer's market near you using the Washington Post's interactive market finder >>

Eat a Healthy Breakfast

Remember being told it’s the most important meal of the day? Well, that’s still true! A healthy fiber and protein-packed breakfast will fuel your day and stave off hunger, all while maintaining your metabolism. Prepare for summer by starting your healthy breakfast habits now.

Short on time? Try these easy make-ahead recipes to save you time:

  • Overnight oatmeal - The night before, combine 1/3 cup oats, 1 tsp light brown sugar, sprinkle of cinnamon, 2 tbs raisins and 3/4 cup skim milk in a mason jar. When you're ready for breakfast, remove mason jar lid and microwave for 55 seconds.
  • Perfect Paleo Egg Muffins - Make these easy egg muffins at the beginning of the week and have them on hand for a grab-and-go breakfast
  • Avocado and Hard Boiled Egg with Toast - Kristy Clarke, Group Exercise Director at Tysons Sport&Health, enjoys a piece of whole wheat toast topped with sliced avocado and hard boiled egg for breakfast!

Head Outside for Lunch

Take the time to go outside for lunch. The time away from your desk will boost your mood and prevent mindless eating. By removing distractions from coworkers, email and work tasks, you’ll be able to focus on what you’re eating and recognize when your stomach feels full. If you have a little extra time, take a brief walk after lunch to allow your food to digest so you’re alert and ready to work when you get back to your desk!

Drink More Water

Get into the habit of drinking your 8 glasses now! Rising temperatures will make staying hydrated critical, especially when you work out regularly. When your body is properly hydrated your muscles will work properly, skin will appear radiant and you’ll feel full between meals.

Find it difficult to get 8 glasses a day? Most sports water bottles are between 20 and 28 ounces so remind yourself to drink three full water bottles a day – for a total of 64oz. Bored with how water tastes? Add a slice of lemon and lime or some cucumber and mint for a refreshing twist.
