    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

    What is Yoga?

Yoga has quite a contended history. There are some who maintain the practice to be as ancient as 10,000 years old, whilst others contend that the yoga we know today has existed for no more than a century. One thing everyone agrees on is that yoga is an integrated system of health and fitness that benefits body, mind and spirit. It has mystical roots in India's Vedic tradition and is built upon set physical poses and fluid movement, alongside awareness of our breath and thoughts.

What is the difference between Yoga and Pilates?

Yoga's roots in philosophy and the spiritual experience mark it as distinct from Pilates. While both involve physical benefits, Pilates is concerned directly with the physical and is all about control of your physical core, whereas yoga involves fluid movements to a set of poses.

Why Is Yoga typically performed barefoot?

Bare feet allow you to better feel your positioning on the mat, without shoes or socks impeding that awareness. It is also a way to reduce your chances of slipping during a pose. If this doesn't sound like something you'd be comfortable with, there are yoga socks, sandals and shoes available at many retailers.

What should I wear to a class?

Yoga is usually performed barefoot, so you will likely not need any type of footwear. We recommend comfortable clothing that will allow freedom of movement without being too loose.

    Is Yoga religious?

No. It is a philosophical discipline based upon the ancient Eastern Indian Sutras. The Sutras provide the basis for yoga practice. It places emphasis on personal physical mastery and spiritual growth without conforming to any religion. Yoga will not conflict with any existing religious beliefs you already hold.

Can I practice Yoga if I'm pregnant?

Our qualified instructors are able to see you through all stages of practice during pregnancy and beyond. Our many courses include Prenatal Yoga, and when the little ones grow up a bit, Mommy and Me and Yoga for Kids.

    What are the benefits?

Yoga is valued for bringing all aspects of the human condition into harmony and is often associated with meditation. It promotes mental clarity, increased energy and emotional well-being as students begin to tone their muscles and burn calories. Its gentle demands on the joints makes yoga a possible option for students dealing with arthritic pain or related mobility issues. Like all forms of exercise, yoga can possibly aid in dealing with both stress and mild depression.

We offer yoga classes designed to increase bone density as well as yoga for scoliosis (check to see if your nearest club offers these).

What makes a good Yoga instructor?

You can feel safe with our instructors who are trained in multiple forms of yoga. We even offer workshops designed to further educate yoga teachers in developing and advancing their students’ progress.

How much does a Yoga class cost?

Smaller or one-on-one courses range from $65 to $115, with larger ones only requiring a membership fee.
